Meta Vision Systems is a major supplier of vision sensors for automatic welding. We supply vision sensors worldwide, with our major markets including China, India, USA and Europe. Approximately 98% of our sales are outside the UK, and about 75% of our sales outside Europe.
Although a relatively small company of just under 30 people, we are very international in our outlook. Our main office is in Eynsham, just outside Oxford, but we also have an office in Montreal, Canada and have staff based in Munich and Hamburg in Germany.
We have a good track record of achieving growth in the past, are committed to continuing this in the coming years. This growth is expected to be helped by the release of a new product that is gradually being launched into different markets. This new generation sensor is also allowing us to enter new market areas that match well with our existing markets.
General requirements:
Working in a small company requires individuals who are able to work well either on their own or in small teams. It also requires people who are flexible and willing to take on a range of different tasks as the workload dictates.
Our customers are in the industrial sector and include well known companies. Familiarity with the requirements of electrical control and automation equipment used in a robust industrial environment would also be considered an advantage.
As we work with customers across a wide geographical area, any additional language skills and an ability to communicate well with international customers would be an advantage in all roles.
The development team is a small team of approximately 5 individuals, including software, electronics and mechanical engineers. Because the different aspects of the design are often very tightly integrated it is important that the candidate can work well with the other members of the team.
Mechanical Designer
Main Duties & Responsibilities
We are looking to recruit a mechanical design engineer. Their role would be to provide the main mechanical engineering design resource and point of contact within the company. The work would involve frequent use of the Solid Edge 3D CAD software to design any of the mechanical items used in our sensor systems. This work would be wide ranging and include designing back-panels, gland plates and enclosures for the control systems, custom mounting brackets for the sensors, special mechanics for positioning of the equipment (such as slides) and the mechanics for the sensor head that positions and protects the sensor's optics and electronics.
The main technologies that we use to produce the items designed in house are varied but include CNC machining, custom extrusions and rapid prototyping (printing or sintering).
The work would go from original concept through design, prototype, test and continuing on for the full production life of the equipment and would include 3D design, maintaining production and manufacturing drawings and documentation, BOMs, assembly and customer documentation.
Depending on workload, we may also expect the person to provide support to other areas of the company, for example in Production or other areas of Projects.
The role is based primarily in the office in Eynsham. However, the candidate may on occasion be asked if they would be willing to travel, for example to see where the equipment is to be used or to contribute to meetings or discussions about equipment.
Main Interactions
The role will involve interaction at all levels within company, from MD to production personnel. Mostly, it will be with other members of the Development, Projects Sales and Production departments. The role will also involve direct contact with suppliers, particularly during the development phase of any projects.
Key Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to degree level in mechanical engineering or other technical subject, or equivalent.
- GCSE maths and English grade C or above.
- 1-3 years of 3D CAD design experience including some experience with “Solid Edge” 3D CAD software, to be able to rapidly pick up work with this package.
- Ability to produce novel solutions for new and existing problems.
- PC literate and able to use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Desirable
- Experience of opto-mechanical design and assembly.
- Experience of working in an industrial or automation environment.
