Two new appointments have been made by Meta Vision Systems Inc, the division of Meta that supplies to North American markets the group's laser-based vision equipment for automating arc welding and other production applications including drilling and riveting.
PIERRE HUOT occupies the new position of Vice President – Americas, a post for which he is ideally suited not least because of his recent sales successes working for the robotics company, ABB Canada Inc, where he increased his division's sales sevenfold to $2m million in little more than a year.
He has extensive experience in developing partner networks for sales and technical support and will concentrate on expanding this for Meta in the North American markets. Pierre will build on existing partnerships with major welding equipment suppliers such as Jetline, Esab and Gullco, which provide Meta systems through their own sales outlets.
Another particular area of expertise is his ability to work closely and effectively with systems houses in the implementation of turnkey installations. Mr Huot holds a B.A.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Ottawa.
TERRY JOHNSON has joined as Automotive Account Director, which is another new position within Meta intended specifically to strengthen the company's already significant penetration into the automotive robotic welding sector. He is a US national from Michigan with a B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and sound robotics experience working for Fanuc and latterly Kuka, amongst others.
His connection with the automotive industry started in the 1980s selling automated assembly, welding and other robotic systems into Ford Motor Company. Subsequent sales, marketing and project management positions, some involving highly relevant laser guidance and robotic machining techniques, have brought him into close contact with other car manufacturers including General Motors and Honda.
Underpinning the new appointments is strong sales growth for Meta in Europe, particularly in automating the welding of general fabrications and vehicle parts. This has allowed investment by the English parent company in its Canadian office, designed to expand the business in North America. Mike Wilson, Managing Director of Meta, who is well known in the robot industry and is the current Chairman of the International Federation of Robotics, will support both Pierre and Terry from the UK.
Meta currently supports 700 of its vision systems operating in 30 countries across every continent (except Antarctica), helping to increase the added value and quality of fabrications by speeding production and reducing rework and scrap. One of its latest initiatives was the acquisition of Integrated Sensor Systems (iSS), East Kilbride, Scotland, a manufacturer of bespoke equipment for weld seam tracking mainly in pipe mills and for pressure vessel applications.
